Legal Self Defense

In this video from the CORE COMBAT WEBINAR a member asks “When is it OK for me to defend myself without getting in any legal trouble?”

And the answer is “a lot sooner than you probably think.” As long as your attacker has to demonstrate is ability, opportunity and intent you are justified in defending yourself with reasonable force.

  1. An assault does not involve physical contact. It does involve a threat and ability to perform the threat. A contact, a touch, a poke, or a push is battery. People need to understand when they are being assaulted. Make a clear statement of your recognition of the threat. You say no and create space. They persist and close the space. e.g. them “Let me see what’s in the bag man.” You “Stay away from me leave me alone.” For me, if they persist they are committing assault against me, and it is go time. Recognize when you are being assaulted, and understand if Jim is your judge, you have not only the right to prevent yourself from being the victim of battery, robbery, or more serious crimes, but an obligation too.
